As Funded by my 2026 Cultural Council of West Palm Beach Artist’s Innovation Fellowship“A Brush with Japan: Expanding Le Chat Through the Collotype Tradition”  A Benrido collotype is made by transferring an image onto light-sensitive gelatin plates, which are carefully exposed and developed to create an exceptionally fine printing surface. Each color requires its own plate and is inked and printed by hand, one layer at a time, with the paper passing through the press repeatedly. The slow, highly skilled process produces extraordinary depth, texture, and subtle tonal detail, making each finished print slightly unique. Benrido, Kyoto’s legendary collotype atelier founded in 1887 and operating its collotype studio since 1905.
